The DVD plans are moving forward at an alarming pace, with Mr. Hergert's enormous contribution with the making of the behind the scenes documentary of the film.

I happened to obtain a copy of this correspondence between Teodore Sturm and Morley Sorley, shortly after the screening event at the Lubbock Flatland Film Festival. Enjoy...

Teodore Sturm writes:

Morley, I received your recent communication only yesterday-I'm in the Gobi doing research on pre-Tibetan chariot hubcaps. I know, I know, out of place out of time- but you have to follow the artifacts. I think these hubcaps may have been originally obtained by Jean Francios Gerbillon, a French Jesuit priest that crossed this desert in the 1600s.

Since our laptop batteries exploded some weeks ago, your email was sent to us by the most ingenious courier service. We are many days out from Ulaanbaatar. We have an email drop there but the only service to us is by train (which coincidentally, has also exploded!) However, there is a small but thriving butterfly courier service.

Here is how it works.
1) your message arrives at Ulan...
2) local artisans with the most incredible microscopic eyesight, paint with tiny brushes, your email message onto the wings of local butterflies (always 3 for redundancy)
3) the butterflies are released to follow a special pheromone that we took with us to our camp.

Ausgezeichnet! - I received your message perfectly about the reunion in Lubbock celebrating Guy Fawkes day. Incredible no? We do a modified reverse of this to send messages.

I must report my health is of some concern since I am recovering from the bite of an air-snake (my ear). These Gobi denizens have inflatable bladders which they fill with ingested air. When the sun rises enough to produce localized heating in the snakes, but the ambient air is still somewhat cool, these reptiles can hover and glide for an hour or two in the early morning or late twilight. Few people die from these bites but they have sometimes intolerable side effects which in my case will remain unnamed. The blast of it is you just cannot hear them approaching when they are in glide mode. We now put sticks into our back collars that will protrude above our heads. Kind of a very primitive London WWII balloon barrage principle. This has proved to be somewhat successful but they are very clever.

I must go now, my passion, my arbeiten, awaits. Try to contact that remarkably tall fellow who always seemed to be at the fringes of our last meeting some 27 years ago. The information I have is - (email address removed to prevent spam) In my heart of hearts I believe this might be a fell address so take your usual precautions.

What a night. A great crowd, good friends, and many new memories of Shoes on the Road. We spent time with Kerry Campbell, David Cagle, Robert Ballew and Bob Goodwin watching the film, and creating the "Special Features" section content for the DVD.

The film's new blurb reads as follows:

The award winning 1979 fictional documentary, "Shoes on the Road", foreshadows the 1980's and 90's films of Martin Di Bergi ("This is Spinal Tap") and Christopher Guest ("Waiting for Guffman", "Best of Show"), and delves into one of the most intriguing questions of our day, "why do we find shoes on the road"?

Architect and Lubbock native David Cagle, assisted ably by a talented cast and crew including Kerry Campbell and Robert Ballew, create a classic tale - man's quest for knowledge and understanding of unusual shoe phenomena. Interviewing such experts as Dr. P.F. Flyer, Odette Sorrell, Stanley Marsh 3, and Dr. Teodore Sturm, Cagle reveals influences from Truman Bradley, Wilhelm Reich, and the Brittany Restaurants. The movie serves as a film school "must see" and is included in cinema cirricula in trade schools and technical institutes throughout the South, the upper Midwest, and portions of northern France.

"We really had no idea this film would resonate with audiences the way it has," muses writer/director Cagle, "we were really just trying to pass our electives in Mass Comm in order to graduate from school." Easily winning both the coveted audience award and the grand jury prize at the annual Texas Tech film festival in 1979, the film continued to gain momentum. Picked up in 1998 by producer Drew Mayer-Oakes, (he credits his enduring love of film to his first "Shoes on the Road" screening), the film was digitally transferred in state of the art facilities, and flawlessly restored to its original black and white, grainy, monophonic condition. Eschewing the late 90's trend of colorizing and the re-cutting of classic films to make more sense, Cagle and his collaborators have left us with an extremely viewable and infinitely memorable film, "Shoes on the Road".

Lubbock Screening Confirmed!

SHOES ON THE ROAD - THE MOVIE will screen at the Flatland Film Festival in Lubbock, Texas on Friday, August 11th.

View their website and come see us in Lubbock! This may be the first Lubbock screening of the film in more than twenty years. David Cagle, Kerry Campbell, Robert Ballew and Bob Goodwin are all scheduled to attend the screening and participate in a Q&A following the film.

It don't get any flatter than this!

DVD Plans Develop

I've been working on a DVD configuration for the film, and have a number of options on the table, besides the basic Director's commentary track, alternate language (We'll be dubbing into Italian - unfortunately we can only afford to pay one voice over artist right now, so she will be doing all the speaking parts), and outtakes.

Other features we are considering:

* video cast commentary track with video inserts from the cast taped live as they watch the film
* clips from some of the cast's other work
* recipes for Lubbock favorites like Pimento Cheese Spread, Green Marshallow Salad, and others
* clips from fan films now permeating the web
* "Shoes on the Road - the Documentary" which will be cool to include if we ever make a Shoes on the Road documentary
AND
* a "where are they now" featurette

I can't even remember the first time I saw the film. I was probably 12 or 13, but it made a lasting impression. Talk about auteurs - these guys were sheer genius. With little more than a camera, microphone and bubble gum, the adventure was born.

Waiting and Planning

Ok, so I'm sitting here in Newark waiting to get to Texas. Can't get home to San Antonio, but Dallas will have to do because of Hurricane Rita.

Meetings went well in New York. David and I had a conference call with Kerry in Lubbock, and all plans are moving forward for the DVD Special Edition, due out sometime this Spring.
